WHO seeks National Professional Officer. We are a directing and coordinating authority for health within the United Nations system. It is responsible for providing leadership on global health matters, shaping the health research agenda, setting norms and standards, articulating evidence-based policy options, providing technical support to countries and monitoring and assessing health trends.

In the 21st century, health is a shared responsibility, involving equitable access to essential care and collective defence against transnational threats.

Job Description

Purpose of the Post:
To strengthen the capacity of the WHO Country Office and WHO technical programmes in the area of health promotion.

Objectives of the Programme:

  • Strengthen institutional capacity to develop health promotion policy and implement appropriate interventions
  • Develop required human resources to country needs and challenges
  • Strengthen health promotion operational research, documentation and sharing of experiences in best practice
  • Undertake advocacy for implementation of health promotion interventions in health and related sectors as well as the reinforcement of partnership, networks and alliances
  • Mobilize resources for development of health promotion at national and lower levels
  • Ensure incorporation of the health promotion component into WHO programmes/activities

The NPO, Health Promotion will use WHO guidelines and other relevant documents to coordinate WCO support to national programmes and activities pertaining to health promotion. The incumbent shall work as WHO Country Office team member in planning executing their responsibilities.

 

Grade: NOC

The Successful Candidate Will:

  • Provide guidance on review/development of national policies, programmes and structures for health promotion
  • Co-ordinate actions aimed at addressing the broad determinants of health that influence health and well-being
  • Support priority health programmes to increase individual, community and societal participation in health education, social mobilization and advocacy in health action especially through empowerment
  • Provide technical support on application of methods such as behaviour change communication, health education, social mobilization and advocacy in health programmes
  • Co-ordinate the public health communication component of the WCO, including where necessary process documentation, media relations and materials development

Qualifications:

  • Essential Master's degree level in health promotion or a basic degree in a health related field with post graduate qualifications in a health, development subject area such as health education, health communication, medical sociology/anthropology, education, population studies or public health field, with good knowledge of health promotion theory and practice

Desirable:

  • Knowledge of or qualification in health or related discipline, ability to write well, implementation of multi-sectoral interventions, policy development skills. Experience working with United Nations or International Non-governmental Organisation

Essential:

  • At least five years experience working with national/international agencies that deal with health promotion, public health, or development

Other Skills:

  • Excellent understanding of participatory learning and development, Internet-based learning and networking as well as command of word processing, spreadsheet and database

Languages:

  • Excellent knowledge of English and a good working knowledge of French
